Three Ways of Motherhood in God

 Mother Julian

Mother Julian

*Today with Julian – July 5th:

I understood three ways
of looking at Motherhood in God:

the first is the creating of our human nature;

the second is His taking of our human nature
(and there commences the motherhood of grace);

the third is motherhood of action
(and that is a great reaching outward, by the same grace,
of length and breadth and
of height and depth without end)

and all is one love.

(Mother Julian, Chapter LIX)

In these three ways of looking at Motherhood in God, Julian again makes use of Trinitarian language:

— It is God the Father Who creates our human nature,
— It is Good the Son Who takes that human nature upon Himself,
— It is God the Holy Spirit Who inspires us to action in the world.

Thus God our Mother gives birth to our fleshly humanity, and who gives birth to our gracefulness, and who gives birth to our spiritual empowerment. God the Holy Trinity is our Mother, our Father, our Brother, our Lover, and  our true Spouse, as Julian sees it.  “And all is one love.”
