Civility and Doubt

David Blankenthorn, speaking this morning with Krista Tippett on her NPR show “On Being,” suggests what is needed in our religious/political dialogue as a society is a commitment to the principles of civility and doubt.
Civility:  The practice of treating another as you would want yourself to be treated (sound familiar?)

Doubt:  The admission that you might be wrong.

It is possible to hold an opinion passionately, and yet engage in discussion with civility and doubt.  Indeed, that is what makes discussion possible.  This was in the context of a discussion on marriage, including two-gender and single-gender marriage.  But it applies to all discourse.
